Intent

At Leechpool, music is valued as a powerful tool for expression, creativity and confidence. Our curriculum enables all children to experience the joy of performing, composing, listening and evaluating across a wide range of musical styles and cultures. We aim to spark a lifelong love of music, giving every child the chance to find their voice, develop their talents, and experience the unique joy of making music with others. For those children in whom music ignites a passion, we aim to nurture that spark and provide clear pathways to help them follow it further.

Implementation

Music is taught fortnightly by a specialist teacher, supported by class teachers through warmups, follow-up activities and regular singing. The curriculum is structured around the Sing Up scheme, ensuring clear progression in singing, rhythm, composition and musical notation. Children use tuned and untuned instruments, explore music from diverse traditions, and respond to sound through movement and performance. Weekly singing assemblies, the annual Music Gala, and themed days such as World Music Day ensure music is visible and celebrated across the school. Pupils also access peripatetic lessons, lunchtime clubs, and enrichment events to extend and deepen their musical experiences.

Impact

Pupils at Leechpool develop a confident, expressive musical identity. They understand and use musical vocabulary, perform with control and expression, and evaluate music with insight and sensitivity. For many, this will be the spark that leads to future musical study, instrumental learning or ensemble performance. Assessment is practical and ongoing, supported by video evidence, pupil reflection, and staff observations using platforms such as Seesaw. Children leave Leechpool having experienced the joy of making music as part of a community — ready to build on their skills in secondary school and beyond.
